Get to know Pastor Sadie:

Pastor Sadie accepted a call to Harbor Christian Church in August of 2017. She was born and raised in San Diego and spent the first part of her career as an educational professional. She taught high school English for many years and also spent several years as an academic counselor. In 2012, Sadie decided to begin seminary at Claremont School of Theology and she graduated with a Master of Divinity in 2015. After graduating, she spent two years pastoring in San Diego before moving to Orange County. She now lives in Costa Mesa with her family which includes four cats, and a Golden Retriever. Sadie loves animals!

Here’s a little more about me:

I grew in San Diego in a family of teachers and scientists. My dad was a neuroscientist and my mom taught science to children. I also lived with my grandma who was a teacher and my grandpa who was a chemist. But somehow, my desire to understand spirituality was so strong that they dropped me at church every Sunday where I met my beloved and very influential childhood pastors, Don and Susan Dewey. They took me under their spiritual wings and created space for me to begin studying scripture at a young age. I became fascinated by the stories of Jesus very early in my life, and this passion has followed me through many different paths.

As I grew, I kept studying scripture, but the universal church stopped feeling like a safe place. I saw too much hurt, too much missing the point, so I took a long break. And it wasn’t until I had my first daughter the same year my mom survived breast cancer that I returned to church. Something in the experience of pregnancy and motherhood called me back.
I kept at it as a dedicated church member, including starting a children’s ministry and volunteering at my home church, Vista La Mesa, in a variety of ways when my daughter was young.

And then, when I became pregnant with my second daughter, I felt a strong call to seminary. Something about studying the sacred in community felt like the right thing to do as I grew a new life within me. I had my second daughter and then began seminary the following year.

As a spiritual teacher and pastor, I’m most interested in creating safe space for people who are wrestling with their own spirituality because they don’t see themselves in the mainstream narratives. I absolutely love to share alternative ways to interpret scripture that are life-giving, community centered, and non-coercive.
